Follow Pearl, Malti & Bruce
Bruce is a box turtle.
More specifically, he is a Texas 3-toed box turtle, and quite a handsome one at that (although his mama admits to possibly being just the teensiest bit biased).
Contrary to popular belief, not everything is bigger in Texas….including Bruce.
Since he is a rescued box turtle, we don’t know how old he is. But we do know he is an adult, and his vet estimates his age to be anywhere from 5 to 8 years old.
At a very modest 5 inches long, 4 inches wide and about 230 grams, we also know he has already reached his full adult length, width and weight (give or take a few fresh salmon treats).
Contrast these measurements with his young South American red footed tortoise sister, Malti. Only 3 years old, Malti already measures 6 inches long by 5 inches wide and weighs in at nearly 800 grams. And she is far from being done growing!
Luckily for Bruce, Malti, and their feathery older brother, Pearl, size doesn’t matter one bit here at Casa Feathers n Beak n Shells. What does matter is love, knowledge – getting to know one another – and caring for each other. That is what family does.
And who better to explain the basics of being a box turtle than the box turtle of the family himself!
Welcome to “Bruce Explains Box Turtles,” which will feature one new intriguing factoid about box turtles per post.
