There is something to be said for being very short, silent and shelled.
You can slip under the radar, so to speak.
And when you have the good style sense to select a “survival-friendly” camouflaging shell color like, say, olive, this ability is amplified.
Other beings – especially the very large, loud, shell-less ones – can walk right past you day after day and year after year and decade after decade and never even know you are there.
But this is not always a good thing.
Because when others don’t know you are there, they don’t care.
Reason being, they don’t know they need to. They don’t know you – you and your rapidly disappearing kind – need caring about, too.
So you gather up all your brave. You choose to come out and let yourself be seen. You let the world know you need a place to call your own and a safe home to come home to.
And this is when you discover it doesn’t matter if you are very short and small and silent.
Because once the world – starting with your large shell-less rescue mommy and her family and friends – sees you, they will fall in love.
And they will lift you up.
