As a wild box turtle, it is important to stay well camouflaged. Sure, you have your powerful double-hinged shell for protection if you need it.

But it is still better if you don’t have to need it.

Because you are small and quick and quite quiet, and your coloration lets you blend in seamlessly with nearly any surroundings, you don’t have to be seen unless you decide you want to be seen.

A super stealthy three-toed box turtle emerges from his deep forest cover to greet his rescue mama (and her iPhone camera case).

This also lends a nice element of surprise, for example, when you decide to sneak up on your rescue mama and her reflective iPhone camera case (which appears to be showing you a very cute lady box turtle who is conveniently located right nearby)!
