Most beings, when they are little, will explore their world with their mouths.

While Malti is no longer precisely “little,” she certainly is still young at only four years old, and her go-to exploration method is still to try to bite whatever it is she is interested in.

To date, I’ve seen her try to bite everything from concrete blocks to car keys to a rubber stress ball to my brand new….hiking shoes.

I really love these hiking shoes, by the way. They are Merrells, my favorite brand. And they weren’t even close to cheap.

I barely had them out of the box before Malti was on her way over, intent on giving the newcomers a thorough once-over. And then, right before my horrified eyes, she opened her mouth and BIT DOWN on the rubberized front bumper of one shoe.

Of course I scrambled to separate the two before either sustained serious damage, pausing only to snap a photo to commemorate yet another precious tortoise moment.

Just after she did the deed….they weren’t even on my feet yet!

And remember…..
