When you are caring for a young tortoise of Malti’s size, it is safe to say weigh-ins are always a, um, big event.

But no matter how often other people exclaim, “Wow, she’s gotten so BIG!” or you look at her and (almost) hyperventilate while imagining how big she has yet to become, it is still a shock the day you pull out the scale for the weigh-in and….

She. doesn’t. fit. on. it.

And I really tried, too. Every which way. I tried picking her up and then putting her down before she had the chance to splay all her feetsies out the way she likes to do. I tried corralling her and cupping my hands around her legs. I tried backing her onto it, and letting her walk onto it on her own while facing me.

All were a solid no-go.

I now realize that what I need to do is get a plate, weigh that, then put her on the plate and then put the plate on the scale and then subtract the plate’s weight from the total reading.

But that will have to weight (sorry, couldn’t resist) for another day. Or perhaps I don’t really want to know.

It really doesn’t matter how big she gets – to her mama, she will always be my “little” girl!

And remember…..
