There is a great deal more to selling choosy ladybirds on the right nest mate than just fine-looking feathers.
For instance, experienced suitors understand they will also be expected to provide round-the-clock, comprehensive security for the nesting site and its occupants.
And while it is always great to put this on a (er) flyer, studies show the best sales tactics tend to be visual.
A particularly fearsome and imposing nest watchbird begins his security shift. He starts by performing a thorough scan of the rightmost perimeter of the nest.As the scan continues, he stays continually alert for signs, smells, and sounds of danger. The watchbird then scans the far and near horizon, looking for even the slightest hints of aerial danger. He concludes this portion of the security scan with a fierce glare (when all else fails, glaring fiercely is guaranteed to send unsavory types running for cover).Rightmost perimeter scan now completed, the fearsome watchbird now launches into an equally thorough scan of the leftmost perimeter.Spying a suspicious movement, he pauses to ascertain the threat level.Realizing it is nothing more than his (large, featherless) nest maid service approaching, he relaxes as he continues to scan and watch, watch and scan.Once more, he concludes his perimeter scan by glaring fiercely to ward off, well, everyone.Scan complete, he signals his large featherless nest maid that he would like to place an order for a fortifying (waffle-flavored) snack.

Oh Pearl, how could any ladybird resist such good looks AND vigilant security?

It’s nearly impossible to fathom, isn’t it, Stephanie! 🙂
