It is always good to be first.
First in prettiness, first in feathery-ness, first in cuteness….and first in line.
Even if you aren’t sure why you’re in line, you want to be first so you can decide if you want whatever-it-is and nab it.
In the same way, when your large featherless assistant brings home a “first of the season” delicacy, you want to be sure to be the first in the flock to sample it.
And – bonus – this also serves to handily reinforce the proper household pecking order.
