It is a common misunderstanding that only big predators can bring down big prey.
In fact, it is not the size of the predator that matters most, but how fierce that predator is.
I am feeling very fierce today. I think I will just sneak up on this large prey.So many aspiring predators get intimidated by size. But this large prey is actually quite docile and slow-moving.It is also very tasty and doesn’t seem to mind being ingested.In fact, sometimes I wonder if it even notices.It trusts far too much in this hard and very crunchy outer defensive wall to keep it safe.But if you are a fierce predator with a sharp curved beak, even the crunchiest defensive wall can only hold for so long.Oh hi Mom – look at this large prey I just brought down!“Your dinner?” I didn’t see you doing the hard work of stalking it and breaching its hard, crunchy outer defenses….Plus, whichever flock member digs in first automatically claims it.And there is also the matter of “cuteness” to consider….
