In the old West, if a new arrival wanted something – say, a piece of land, a stretch of river to mine for gold, a goat – they would first have to do something called “staking their claim.”
Even those new to the art of “staking” could prioritize desirable items based on how interested others seemed to be in those items.
Happily, this technique is still as useful today as it was back then.
