Hello dear Patreon Patron,

Welcome to this special weekly blog feature designed just for YOU.

Behind the scenes, being an interspecies flock mama comes with some unusual challenges.

For starters, there is the language barrier.

It can be challenging to know what your flock mates want and need when you don’t share a common dialect.

But it can also be exciting.

For instance, with each of my three flock mates, I am continually developing a secret language – one that only the two of us know how to speak. One-to-one, each of us can communicate rather well with each other at this point, even if I can’t easily explain how that communication process works to those outside our little flock.

You understand. If you are reading this, you either share your life with animal friends or you love animals enough to support our work here, and so I trust you get it. I know you get it.

Another huge challenge comes in raising awareness about the unique intelligence and distinct personalities of so-called “exotic” animal species like birds and turtles and tortoises.

So often I have received messages from people on social media like this one:

tortoise facebook comment

Comments like this one inspire me SO MUCH.

They make my life feel like it is worth living.

Honestly, to know that my Pearl, Malti and Bruce have opened even one other person’s eyes to all the other feathered and shelled beings who might otherwise go unnoticed and un-cared about….to me, that is a well-lived life.

It is the life I want to live.

This is also why I see Pearl, Malti and Bruce and the work we do together as one of ambassadorship.

They are the animal ambassadors for feathered and shelled beings everywhere.

I am their devoted biographer, press secretary, waitress, maid, entertainment and activities coordinator and Chief Carer.

It is my privilege and honor to serve them and support them in this work.

And I have big plans to share more of their daily lives and care needs in books, blog posts, care guides, short films, music and live-streaming (much more about that in coming posts here).

For now, thank you, sweet Patreon Patron, for choosing to take this wild and wonderful ride with us!
