Day 308: Bad Feather Day

In featherless culture, it is common to explain away a less-polished appearance by saying you are having a “bad hair day.”

The moment you say this, everyone shakes their head in sympathy – no explanation needed.

What is lesser known is that this works just as well when you have feathers.

Let’s say, for example, you are in the middle of a molt.

Um, Mom....you're really staring.
Um, Mom….you’re really staring.
Anything in particular I can help you with?

What do you mean, "feathers sticking up?"
What do you mean, “feathers sticking up?”
How many times have I told you - my feathers don't "stick up." They "fluff."
How many times have I told you – my feathers don’t “stick up.” They “fluff.”
Oh...THOSE feathers? They're just having a "bad feather day."
Oh…THOSE feathers? They’re just having a “bad feather day.”
I knew you would understand.
Yes, poor dears…..why don’t we give them a little privacy to compose themselves.
