I like to make spinach and fruit smoothies. Pearl likes to help. More specifically, she likes to nibble the spinach leaves and admire her reflection in the shiny face of the blender. Although technically, in a cockatiel’s world that probably qualifies as “helping”.

Birders: The Central Park Effect
Fellow bird enthusiast Raimy Rosenduft recently emailed me to share an exclusive trailer from the upcoming HBO documentary film series. Seems he had stumbled across our own feathery superstar and figured any blog with such good taste in subject matter might be interested in previewing similar visionary work that features Pearl’s wild cousins. Good thinking,ContinueContinue reading “Birders: The Central Park Effect”
The Early Bird Gets the….Worms?
As previously discussed in detail, Pearl’s palate could rival any 5-star gourmet chef. Thai, Mexican, Southwestern, American, waffles (a food category in itself with Pearl) …. and Asian. Specifically, Asian rice noodles. This is the dish when I first crack open the container: Before long, a certain feathery someone expresses interest. A separate portion ofContinueContinue reading “The Early Bird Gets the….Worms?”
Laffy Taffy Goes Boom
I (heart) banana flavored Laffy Taffy. In so doing, I am very much aware that the nutritional value reading here tends towards zero and far on past into the realm of toxic. I also know that “banana flavored” has nothing to do with anything that might bear the color, shape, or flavor of an actualContinueContinue reading “Laffy Taffy Goes Boom”
Birdology
I was stuck in the airport, once again waiting on a connecting flight (this happens to me all the time during my spring travels for eating disorders awareness week) when I happened to wander past a bookshop and spy the title “Birdology”. Of course I went right in. Little did I know that the author,ContinueContinue reading “Birdology”
My Bird, My Boss
As the Alpha (and only) bird in the household, Pearl sees her role from a supervisory perspective. She doesn’t see any need to ask permission, either. As an interesting adjunct to the What’s Yours is Mine rule, Pearl also awards herself right of first refusal on every new object that enters her sphere. And sheContinueContinue reading “My Bird, My Boss”
Just Three Sea Creatures
Pearl and I each have defined roles in our household. While Mommy is clearly an introvert, Pearl is the consummate extrovert. She is always seeking out new playmates (especially when the Chief Playmate – aka me – is too busy working to have time for important activities like chewing, shredding, and feather scratching). In theContinueContinue reading “Just Three Sea Creatures”
Now You See Me….
Most kiddos like to play a good, rousing game of hide n’ seek from time to time. Feathered kids are no exception, it would seem. Only feathered kiddos never seem to grow out of their enthusiasm for the game. At 10 years old, Pearl still enjoys this game as much as she did when sheContinueContinue reading “Now You See Me….”
The Parrot Who Owns Me
Before I happened to notice a tiny reference to a book called “The Parrot Who Owns Me” in one of those scarily on-target “sponsored links” riding the margins of my amazon.com customer page, I had never heard of Dr. Joanna Burger. I certainly didn’t know she was one of the foremost ornithologists in the world.ContinueContinue reading “The Parrot Who Owns Me”
The Quality Control Expert
Because my mom’s kitchen so frequently produces delicacies that my avian eagerly anticipates, every so often a spontaneous quality control inspection is scheduled to be sure the facility is up to par. Usually, these inspections are themed. This past Sunday, the inspection centered around the quality of the cooking implements being used to prepare preferredContinueContinue reading “The Quality Control Expert”
