Being born with a home on your back is pretty brilliant.
When your home is also a totally secure hinged box you can duck into at any time, you can pretty much move to the top of the food chain.
But when you can also climb anything climbable (and some things that aren’t), well, that’s when life gets really exciting.
The sky is the limit – or the back yard, as the case may be.
Let’s say your large shell-less mama has cordoned off a section of the back yard for you and your shelled sister to take turns using as an outdoor play area.
She has secured it (so she thinks) so well, predator-proofing it from above and on all sides.
A nice spring day arrives and she pops you into it so you can go exploring and do your hunting and swimming and the other things you like to do.
It doesn’t take long before you find something great to climb, so you start up it immediately, and before you even realize it you have climbed….out.
For some reason, your mama chooses this exact moment to walk downstairs to check on you.
She finds you sitting on the grass OUTSIDE your play area looking rather dazed and confused as you try to get your bearings.
The moment she spots you, of course she rushes right over to scoop you up and pop you back into your high-security permanent outdoor habitat!
