Just in case it isn’t altogether obvious by now, I like birds. A lot. Consequently, there are often quite a number of feathery things scattered around my house, including but not limited to a particularly lively 75-gram bundle of grey and white feathers. Occasionally my feathery sidekick happens upon some of the other feathery inhabitants.

It’s Not Easy Being Green
Especially if you’re broccoli. And someone who happens to have wings, claws and a small sharp beak thinks you have 5-star flavor. For the record, Pearl may be the only diner in existence who likes the way I cook. Or he doesn’t have any taste buds. I prefer the former interpretation, but since I eatContinueContinue reading “It’s Not Easy Being Green”
Wet Bird Couture: The Crest Pouf
When I was in high school (and college for that matter) I used to like to “pouf” my hair. I had very long hair – very long curly-permed hair. I also owned bottles and bottles of “AquaNet” – the hairspray of choice for those who want their styling products to work like, well, glue. AndContinueContinue reading “Wet Bird Couture: The Crest Pouf”
Beware of GreenBeak
All I can say is, I wouldn’t want to be a green leafy vegetable in this household.
How to Thoroughly Enjoy Your Breakfast
For parrots, if it’s not fun it’s not worth doing. Take breakfast for example. Breakfast tastes very good inside the bowl. But what about if it is outside the bowl? It might even taste better (and it will be very fun ‘training’ Mommy to pick up all the seed hulls and millet stalks that areContinueContinue reading “How to Thoroughly Enjoy Your Breakfast”
Wet Bird Couture: The Egret
Egrets are undeniably graceful birds. With their pure white sleek feathery bodies, long white wings, stark black beaks and tails and sharp, discerning eyes, the egret is visually striking. At least, that is, until you’ve seen their cockatiel counterpart. Introducing “The Egret,” the latest must-have look from Wet Bird Couture.
Couscous: A Love Affair That Will Last Forever
Like all parrots, Pearl enjoys eating. He enjoys eating edible things and also non-edible things (here, think wicker, twist-tie papers, and tonight I saw him rip off and chew the edges of a tasty paper towel.) But there are certain dishes that are long-standing favorites. Take couscous for instance. This is a dish worth everyContinueContinue reading “Couscous: A Love Affair That Will Last Forever”
Wet Bird Couture: The Bald Eagle
The “bald eagle” is, of course, the national bird of the United States. But that is probably just because the people in charge of picking a national bird hadn’t seen the “cockatiel” yet. First of all, they look a lot alike – especially when wet. Second of all, cockatiels eat seed and waffles (not eels,ContinueContinue reading “Wet Bird Couture: The Bald Eagle”
The Assistant Chef
Cockatiels are very confident by nature. If it looks interesting, they jump in and give it a go. Whether they are invited to or not. Recently The Small Tree (aka a certain avian’s Grandma) hosted a waffle brunch. She got more, um, help than she bargained for in the preparations.
Dance of the Laptop
My parrot is very artistic. Creative. Talented. He is also an excellent dancer. And extremely dedicated to whatever he does … or wants. For instance, when Pearl loves something, he would no sooner follow STING’s advice (“If you love someone set them free”) than he would offer me that stalk of crunchy millet I justContinueContinue reading “Dance of the Laptop”
