Bruce the Rescued Box Turtle: Hand In Paw

Meet and greets with a species that is not your own can present some challenges.

For starters, perhaps where you come from there typically aren’t any (on account of how you never really can know for sure when “meeting” might turn into “eating”).

But then you happen upon a rather odd and very large shell-less being who flips everything you think you know about interspecies friendship on its head.

Not only does she seem totally uninterested in having you for lunch – she even brings you your lunch! Every single day!

After awhile, this begins to sink in.

Whatever her mealtime favorites may be, clearly “box turtle” isn’t on her list.

Whew.

With that essential out of the way, it is time to navigate the next steps.

She is very high. You are very low. Even making eye contact – still a new experience for you in and of itself – presents certain logistical issues.

But you persevere. She perseveres. Then one day, she teaches you a lovely greeting custom of her species – the handshake.

Pawshake.

Hand-in-pawshake.

And just like that – you’ve made a new forever friend!

And just like that – you finally know what it feels like to make a new forever friend.
